False Light - White Ward
Genre: Deviant Black Metal / Jazz Metal
8/10
A powerful album. I first listened to it during a troubling time in my life, and it really stuck with me. The atmosphere is incredible, and the addition of brass in all of the songs is a beautiful addition. This was the first album I listened to by White Ward and it led me down a rabbit hole of their discography, which lead me to love their style of music. Warping our idea of 'metal' by including many new wave-esque sounds in with the powerful vocals and guitar, alongside the interludes of amazing brass, ties together a solid album.
favorite tracks Cronus, Leviathan
Cronus brings a lot to the table, with it being the 6th song of this 8 song album. The atmosphere was already set well with the previous 5 tracks, and opens with the new wave sound. It's not too short, though on the shorter end of all of the tracks on this album. With a runtime of 6:20, it makes it's point well within the shorter runtime.
Leviathan Opens the album wonderfully. It's a powerful sound, and with it's 13:17 runtime, it's able to set the scene for the songs to come. It opens the floodgates for what to expect out of this album- a powerful, deep seeded meaning in the album.
least favorite tracks Echoes in Eternity
Echoes in Eternity is the shortest song on this album- it's 3:28 runtime, while a normal song length for other genres and styles, is a bit short for this album, with most of the songs passing the 10 minute mark. I feel like it isn't given enough time to show it's place within the album.
I quite like this album. I think that it's a powerful one, using concepts such as Fatalism throughout this entire piece. I really love the atmospheric samples they used throughout, and it really gives the listener the deep feelings it's trying to portray. This is an album best listened to on a very good sound system, or if you don't have one, good headphones. I feel like the best experience would be to feel it within you physically, and that gives it more power for the listener. I gave this album an 8/10 mostly due to my favor to their other albums, and it's not perfect. It's a phenomenal piece that holds lots within, though some tracks fall a bit flat, and sometimes it's hard to determine what song you're listening to. While most atmospheric albums don't have cut and dry cuts between songs, I feel myself feeling that they sound vaguely simular, in a way.
